Technology Summit: Transforming the Experience of Care in the Home

Technology Summit
Transforming the Experience of Care in the Home:
Opportunities and Challenges

April 9 and 10, 2018
Fisher Colloquium, McDonough School of Business
Georgetown University

The Long Term Quality Alliance (LTQA) and AgingWell Hub at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business invited long-term services and supports (LTSS) providers, consumer advocates, and payers to join with technology innovators and entrepreneurs to explore the opportunities and challenges of transforming in-home care through the use of technology.

The Summit – over two days in April – involved technology presentations; moderated panel discussions between LTSS providers/payors/advocates and technology innovators; and participant roundtables to delve into the issues involved in transforming care through the development and application of new technologies.

The program addressed the challenges and opportunities through dialogue around 3 “buckets” of technologies:

  • Technologies that Promote Independence
  • Technologies that Enable Cross-Sector Collaboration
  • Virtual Delivery Systems

Participants engaged with a cross-section of their LTSS stakeholders and technology innovator peers in working sessions to target specific challenges and propose solutions.

An overview of the Agenda is provided below:

Monday, April 9

8:00 am             Registration

8:30                    Welcome and Keynote Address

9:45                    Technologies that Promote Independence

Explore the challenges in providing technologies that can monitor and intervene to empower individuals with functional limitations to perform tasks necessary to remain independent (e.g., ADLs). Technologies may be coupled with and enhance human intervention (e.g., family or paid caregivers) to enable human resources to be employed less intensively and more efficiently. Applications also support self-direction and enable individuals with disabilities and/or family caregivers to locate, select, schedule, and evaluate personal care providers.

  • Overview
  • Brief Technology Presentations
  • Panel Discussion: “What We Need to Promote Independence and Transform How We Provide Services and Supports”
  • Participant Roundtables — to consider action steps to transform the care experience

12:30                   Lunch and Lunch Speaker

2:00                     Technologies that Enable Cross-Sector Collaboration

Explore in-home care needs and the challenges faced in developing and commercializing technologies that can transform the care process and yield efficiencies in care delivery through greater cross-sector coordination and collaboration. New technology partners help improve communication between consumers, caregivers, and providers. Applications promote efficiencies in the way the paid workforce is engaged and support better training, compensation, and career paths for that workforce.

  • Overview
  • Brief Technology Presentations
  • Panel Discussion: “What We Need in Collaboration Technologies to Improve Access, Effectiveness, and Quality of Services and Supports”
  • Participant Roundtables — to consider action steps to transform the care experience.

5:15                     Reception and Networking

Tuesday, April 10

9:00                   Keynote Interview: “Disrupting Home Care – The Investor View of Technology”

9:45                   Virtual Delivery Systems

Explore various tele-services solutions that bring greater access and convenience to persons with mobility limitations and their caregivers. These include technologies enabling more routine monitoring and engagement to help overcome social isolation, and coordinate and manage the health status and functional assistance needs of high-risk populations.

  • Overview
  • Brief Technology Presentations
  • Panel Discussion: “What We Need in Virtual Delivery System to Facilitate Transformation”
  • Participant Roundtables — to consider action steps to transform the care experience.

12:00                  Working Lunch: Meeting Big Needs and Transforming LTSS Through Technology – What Could Accelerate Change?”

  • Round tables and summary of conclusions
